Hello! I’m Martin — a euphonium player, composer, and improviser from northeast Scotland, now based in Oslo. I mostly work in jazz, experimental music, and the in-between spaces where those overlap with folk, sound art, and the occasional bit of joyful chaos. I love using the euphonium in unexpected ways, and a big part of what I do involves stretching the role of low brass beyond its usual borders.

Over the years, I’ve been lucky to perform and record with artists like Laura Jurd (Stepping Back, Jumping In & The Big Friendly Album) and Elliot Galvin (Police, Police), and I’m currently involved in a number of collaborative projects including Dopey Monkey (Chamber Music Scotland & Cryptic Artists-in-Residence), the Oslo-based jazz composers’ ensemble OJKOS, and the large ensemble Dandelion Jazz Orchestra, which I co-lead with pianist/composer David Swan.

Composition is a central part of my creative life. My latest large ensemble work, Fraileach, was written for and premiered by OJKOS and is due for release in January 2026. It draws on my obsession with Scottish landscapes, archival recordings, and how memory lives in sound. A lot of my recent work explores how music can connect to walking, listening, and observing the natural world. I love making music that invites reflection, whether through delicate textures or full-on euphonium noise.

This festival is a dream scenario for me: music, nature, and shared creative energy all in one. I’m especially looking forward to premiering a new solo set I’ve been developing that weaves together electronics, drones, field recordings, and slow-building rhythmic patterns — kind of like music for walking alone in a foggy glen. I’m especially excited to bring this work to Islay.

Outside of music, I’m into competitive coffee, analogue photography, and nature walks — so I’m fully ready for the landscapes here.
