Community Lead Seth - Dundee

Jazz Scotland is committed to engaging and creating a community of jazz musicians, fans, listeners and practitioners across the whole of the country, no more so than here in Dundee.

We want to ensure that a ethical community programme is a fully-embedded strand of all our festival work.

At its core, this aim is about making sure that Dundee Jazz Festival is as relevant as it can be for a wide range of people. We believe that we can develop exciting, deep, and ethical models of working with musical, geographic, interest-based, and cultural communities that recognises their assets and agency and supports them to achieve their musical/cultural goals.

In Dundee, our Community Lead is local musician and educator Seth Bennett.

About Seth Bennett

I'm a double bass player based in Dundee, and working across Britain and Europe. Current projects include the Johnny Hunter Quartet, Moonmot (with whom I will shortly be touring in India), New String Collective, Scuba, and Sloth Racket, as well as lots of casual engagements.  I also run a near-weekly free improvisation session in Dundee, called Open Saturdays, where I play for one hour, and invite anybody to listen or sit in.

I'm interested in improvisation, both inside and outside the jazz tradition, and my inspiration above all is my love for situations in which everyone involved, musicians and audience, have an equal input into the creation of the music. I also just love playing the bass, and taking on the many different roles of a bass player, be that supportive, reflective, dynamic, static, compositional or disruptive.
