Matt Holborn: For Stuff
Violinist Matt Holborn and his band celebrate the swing, vitality and musical ingenuity of jazz violin pioneers Stuff Smith and Stéphane Grappelli.
The violin is still not widely seen as being a natural instrument for swing, despite a history going back to the early days of Jazz. From the 1920’s, Smith and Grappelli helped put jazz violin on the map, showcasing how the violin could match up to any trumpet or saxophone as a lead instrument, and leaving an incredible legacy of recordings and performances in Europe and the USA.
Matt Holburn’s set features classics from both players alongside music from his latest album For Stuff, inspired by Smith’s unmistakable swing and sound.
Joined by Fraser Urquhart (piano), Ed Kelly (double bass) and Max Popp (drums), this is a warm, vibrant tribute to the history and versitility of jazz violin, delivered with a top Scottish band.
